A beautiful day in Anis country! Let the sweet scent of aniseed waft through the village lanes to the heart of the former Benedictine abbey. Once through the door, your eyes won’t know what to look at, between the beauty of the abbey, the omnipresence of candy boxes and packages, and the comings and goings of the Fabrique teams.
Current production, Anis basins
In the sugar-coating workshop, all your senses will be captivated by the fresh scent of aniseed and its hint of spice. You’ll discover anise seeds delicately coated with syrup and essential oils as they roll around in copper basins. You’ll then be able to observe the packaging workshop where our sweets find their jewel case. A convivial moment with your guide, who knows the Fabrique like the back of his hand!
The video room
A streaming video reveals the many steps involved in making our sweets, from ingredient selection to shipping. The video is in French with English subtitles. Find out all about our Anis if you missed the guided tour.
The Crypt of Flavigny® Abbey
Discovering the Chapelle Sainte-Reine and the Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Piliers provides an insight into the history of the abbey as it began in 719, under the reign of Charles Martel.
The chanting of the monks will remind you that, for 1,000 years, this Carolingian crypt was a place of perpetual prayer. A remnant of the former abbey church, the crypt bears witness to the Gallo-Roman, Romanesque and Gothic eras.
The Anise Museum
Hundreds of years ago, treasures were preciously preserved in the heart of the abbey: boxes, advertisements, tools, sugar-coating basins… Our little museum reveals illustrations dating, in some cases, from the early 19th century. They all tell the beautiful love story of the shepherd and his shepherdess, a timeless romance that has been perpetuated year after year with subtle and delicate variations. You’ll also discover the whole story of the little seed that became candy in Flavigny. Did you know that Louis XIV always carried a box ofanisse in his pocket?
Les Anciens Ateliers
Step back in time by pushing open the doors of the former shipping and packaging workshops. In operation since the departure of the monks after the French Revolution until the end of 2019, the vaulted rooms have retained all the charm of the 30s to 60s, with their original furniture and old machines. Videos of the workshop in operation will help you understand the know-how of the employees and how the machines work. Long reserved for Fabrique personnel, you can now discover a wing of the inner cloister and a view of the grand staircase.
The aroma laboratory & olfactory workshop
Discover the 3rd ingredient of our candy: natural flavors, which are as slow and meticulous to develop as the sugar-coating process, and which make it possible to offer a generous range of 13 different flavors. Have fun recognizing them with our little olfactory workshop… It’s up to you!
Le Café des Anis and its terrace
Enjoy a gourmet break in our little café nestled under the vaults of the abbey or, in fine weather, on our terrace in the courtyard of the Fabrique around our beautiful enamelled tables. Small catering available. Don’t miss our homemade crêpes at weekends, on public holidays and during vacation.
Traditional wooden games
A cosy place to have fun with family and friends. Giant Power 4, giant stick games, Dutch billiards, infernal tower, frog game and much more…
La Boutique des Anis
It’s in our beautiful boutique that everyone can take the time to taste our Anis de Flavigny® and discover our 13 flavors. The Anis boutique also offers other confectionery and delicatessen specialties that our director, Catherine Troubat, loves to unearth at her trade shows.
Accessibility
The crypt, Anise Museum, former workshops, video room and store are all accessible on the same level.
Sensory wooden games are available in the playroom.
Access to the workshop is via a staircase*. For those unable to access the first floor, a film detailing all the stages in the making of our candy is shown in the video room on the first floor.
* As the workshop is located within the Abbey, access by staircase cannot be modified.
